Win xp home is a basic format for those who do want to do that much on pc it is for the whole family but the profissional is what most people use in business or as students as there are a lot more tools better spreadsheets and better presentation elements, text types and a whole host of graphic features and enhanced word processor .but the biggest difference is the price it cost over £100.

XP home is more for the inexperienced. You are limited on what you can access. XP Pro is the same thing but you can access more applications like MMC. It is mostly for business or schools. In any case I recommend the PRO.
P.S. PRO does not come with any office programs like that one person said. Office is another software you have to buy unless it comes pre-installed from the factory.

Home Edition is a simplified version of Professional, especially in areas such as security and networking. Professional is more for the corporate environment.

Home edition is for home users and Pro is for businesses or people that want to network computers. Pro has more features and Home. But the bottom line is Pro is for Business use and Home is for family or personal use.

i am no expert but i think the home addition may be for use at home and the professional addition is for companies to use. This is the way round i use them but i do not think there is any differencve between them (well not that i have noticed).
