Of course it should stop. All you have to do is report them. The AKC takes breeding rights away from people who neglect and abuse dogs, but *you have to report them*... Start with the local humane society or police department, and then contact the AKC.
Edit: And yes, the AKC does enforce things. Holy carp! One poster here commented on how they work. As breeders, we are held to very strict standards in order to remain in high standing with the AKC. They are NOT *just* a registration office, unless you are *just* a mute bystander. You have to report these people, just like any other law-breaker!

It would not make a bit of difference to a puppy mill whether their puppies have papers or not.
They breed simply for the money with no regard to the quality of the puppy.
As for the AKC, I think (and this is my own personal opinion) that they are a money hungry organization. They over charge for the amount of paperwork they provide.
If anyone has ever had an AKC inspection, I would hope the individual they had was nicer than the man who did my inspection.
Granted I had areas that needed improvement, but he was about the most rude, and snide person I had ever meet.

AKC is a registration service and only a registration service
It is the job of the perspective buyer to make sure the breeder he is looking at puppies from has done the right things and had the appropriate testing done for what ever breed you are looking at.
AKC just registers dogs they do not enforce anything.
That is not their job.
People need to know and understand that just because a dog is registered "papered" it does not mean anything.

The AKC is a registry, nothing more. It is only their job to register dogs.
But I do think AKC has gotten awfully money grubbing as of late, especially for a 'non-profit' org. First PAWS and crawling in bed with HSUS, and then their almost total lack of help from the 'legislative' department, and now this new judges rule.
Why would you think they are going to care about anything but their bottom line?
No, definately NOT my fathers AKC!!!

Yes, I do believe they should only provide a trained breeder with papers for their pets. Maybe then people who should have no business owning a pet would be less likely to reproduce them for the wrong reasons.

From what I understand - they verify breeds, not regulate breeding. Two different things. Plenty of groups out there for ethical treatment, etc. to stop this behavior.

I couldn't agree more... It does need to stop. I say that you should go to www.aspca.org and say to them what your saying to us. There are a lot of actions we can take with this certain problem.
