A question of personal preference, of course. If you like a twangy tone: Tele. If you like a thick tone: Les Paul. If you like something in between: Strat.

For myself, I love the Les Paul tone, but that thing weighs a ton, so I wouldn't use one except in the studio. If you want good tone without the weight, I'd suggest Ibanez guitars.

yes, no. no yes. What sound do you like? It's all preference. Do remember this: Gibson discontinued the Les Paul in the early 1960s in favor of the lighter weight SG series. Only because several British artists in the 1960s played LPs war the line reissued. Both guitar types have good and bad points, as does the Telecaster. Gibson guitars have become very expensive over the years. The studio models are functionally the same guitars as the higher priced ones. If the small difference in the pickups for some $2000+ model really floats your boat have a good luthier drop a set of burstbuckers or whatever into a studio model and save $800-$2000. The only real improvement on some high priced LPs is that a few have an extra long neck tenon where the neck heel extends under the neck pickup. That will add better tone. Other than that It is all cosmetics or getting Ace Frehley or Zack Wilde ot Peter Frampton his cut. American Strats have better hardware than the Mexican ones. But you can buy a heavy sustain block for the tremolo of a Mexican one from Guitar Fetish that really improves tone and sustain. And there are lots of replacement pickups. Play everything you can get your hands on and test the feel and tone. Buy what YOU like. By the way, I have owned strats, LPs and teles and like all of them.

Never really been a paul fan. I've got 3 teles (custom, thinline and standard - all over 20 years old), and two strats. Gibson necks have always felt a little too chunky and awkward to me. I have a 76 Gibson Firebird that I break out occassionally, but I can't fly on it like I can on my Fenders. I play through a line 6 amp, which also gives me the best of many worlds.

Depends on the size of your hands. Also the sound you want.

Gibson Les Paul give a chunkier sound than either a Tele or a Strat. This is good for playing a lot of heavy metal or hard rock. Since Les Pauls weigh a ton, they have longer sustain.

Fenders may have single coil pickups. Depending on the wiring you can get sound of out-of-phase wiring. Some humbucking pickups like in the Les Pauls can be wired for that sound but it does not give you the same flexibility. Also, Fenders are lighter weight.

Consider all this before buying a guitar.

I have both a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Strat. They each have their own distinct sound and feel. If I were only allowed one, I'd say the Gibson, because I love that sound. But I don't have to do I? I say one or more of each, thank you.

Fender Telecaster for me! Mine is blond, with a maple neck. Originally came with a white pickguard but I long ago replaced that with black. (Looks much better.) Been my axe for thirty-nine years! Never really played a LP but I used to have an SG. Sorry
I ever got rid of it, though. Had a great feel. Never cared for the feel of a Strat, personally. Also, took me a rather long time to get used to the look for some reason, especially the white ones.
