Why is alcohol and tobacco legal & marijuana isn’t? I don’t understand, since alcohol makes a person more unaware and plain stupid then marijuana and cigarettes seem to be just as bad as marijuana, maybe even more so since its actually paper drinched in tobacco and other chemicals. I also hear mixed reports about how dangerous it is or isn’t. Can’t someone do a intense study and come to a solid conclusion?

Because rich people know how to market that stuff a lot easier. Also since the United States has been running before the Civil war and even the revolutionary war, Tobacco and alchol has been a way of making money. Now, if someone had found marijuana and planted it in the States around the 1700's, we would probably be smoking maryJanes cigarrettes instead of Newports and Camel lights

Because we don't need it. Marijuana is not practical in any degree. It has a list of abusive problems a mile long.
Granted it isn't as bad as alcohol in any respect.
For example driving while impared on marijuana won't impare your abilities as bad as alcohol, but marijuana users seem to feel the need to specifically test how dangerous it is to drive while smoking as much as possible. Because of this there is an unreal amount of crashes due to marijuana. You guys need to establish a no driving within a few hours of smoking rule.
Then there is the addiction problem. Yes, marijuana isn't as addictive as alcohol or heroin. However about 1 in 10 people do become dependant on this. Far less than other drugs, yes, but still noticable.
Then there is the lung problem. No marijuana won't cause cancer. It has been proven to cause just about every other lung problem.
Medical marijuana. There are good and bad things here. Smoking marijuana is worthless. The whole pain relieving effect is too short lived to be avantagous. It needs to be eaten or made into a vapor to be effective.
You might notice that there is no shinning endorsements above. Yes, it isn't as bad as alcohol. But there is no great reason to legalize it either.

Alot of officials have said the reason why marijuana is not legal is because it is an hallucinative drug, however I believe that the reason it is not legal is because the government will be unable to cover the market and claim taxes on something people can grow in their gardens, use without governement supervison and bottom line the governement has yet to figure out how to make a substancial profit therefore it will continue to be illegal until they do.

First off I just wanted to add that - They would NOT HAVE to legalize Poligamy if they allowed marriages of the same sex in all states !! These are 2 DIFFERENT issues and ARE NOT related in any way.
As far as the pot goes YES they should legalize it. It has medicinal purposes and has proven to be effective for different illnesses/ diseases. I do not smoke ( nor have I ever ) pot ,but iIhave NO quarms with people doing so as long as they do not shrug their responsibilities ( same as drinking ).
I am still trying to see the difference between smoking a joint and getting behind the wheel of a vehicle and leaving a bar so drunk that you cannot even stand up straight. It is all Iovernment regulations when it comes to the legalizatiion of narcotics- this subject is still taboo and not socialbly acceptable.
I feel that the country IS getting closer to legalizing pot however.
Look around and you see legalization rally's all around. here in Maine we have an annual rally on a residents private property and people literally come from around the United States to rally for legalization.
The police are there to insure a peaceful celebration but they do not arrest ANYONE for smoking the substance -- IN FRONT OF THEM -- NOW DOES THIS NOT SEEM A TAD BIT HYPOCRTICAL ??? The celebration is refered to as HARVESTFEST ( the group PHISH use to perform every year there )- it is in STARKS, MAINE - I am sure you can find info of this celebration on the net. I believe there are MORE pot smokers in this world than drinkers and cigarette smokers. So again I say YES to legalization. It aint no different OR worse than drinking!!
Come to think of it I believe it to be less of a hazard - pot mellows and drinking can make one violent!!!

They did make alcohol illegal back in the 1920's. They found that more people drank and drank more booze than when it was legal. They also found that the money that organized crime made from selling alcohol made them more powerful and able to corrupt the police force, judges, and politicians. After they saw that making alcohol illegal caused more and worse problems than it solved, they made alcohol legal again.
In the 1950's, college students smoked MJ. they would drive to Mexico, buy 3to 5 keys of grass, put it in their trunk, drive back to college and sell it to their friends. It sold for $5 an ounce back then. Organized crime wasn't interested as it sold for such a low price that it wasn't worth their while. Then, the Feds and states started cracking down and making people serve jail time for having it and selling it. College students were not willing to take the chance of bringing it in the country so organized crime took over the market and drastically increased the price.
Now, Pot smoking has increased tremendously, organized crime is making billions of dollars a year from it, it has opened up drug use for millions in the country and the money is corrupting the government. Does this sound familiar? Remind you of the 1920's? I suppose that organized crime and corrupt politicians are smarter now. They don't want to "kill the goose that laid the golden egg" by making pot legal.

You want a solid conclusion well here it is. Because our Government and the law makers are retarded. They grow it for cancer or hiv patients so why not taxe it make it legal and bring this country out of its debt besides how many people you see die in marijuana realated accidents? None, they are only doing 10 to 20 miles a hour. Its real hard to kill some one at 10 miles a hour.

I think the main reason it remains illegal is because the alcohol and tobacco companies (giants) are the biggest backers of anti-marijuana legislation. Think about it, I believe the majority of people would rather legally smoke a joint than drink alcohol. If this was the case, the alcohol and tobacco companies would lose profits!

Believe it or not, in an eerie flashback marijuana was made illegal as a tool to use to deport Mexicans after the need for their cheap labor was used up. The move was also partially funded by the large paper companies who stood to make much more money cutting down trees than they were making growing commercial hemp for use in paper production.

Well alcohol and tobacco are drugs too but I guess the companies that make them are powerful enough to keep them on the shelves.
Forget making marijuana legal .. alcohol and tobacco should be made illegal too!

Most of the people that answered are totally right. Marijuana is too useful. It's too easy to grow and its too good. I smoke marijuana everyday and i go to school full-time and work full-time. I love marijuana and i will never quit smoking. I don't care about our stupid laws. when i smoke weed it only affects me..nobody else. i don't drive when i'm high and I'm always alone so i can't possibly harm another person. therefore, i will continue to break this law until the day i die. breaking laws that might harm another person is an entirely different story. what only affects you is your own business. i say break the law with me smoke up and maybe one day this reefer madness culture will finally come to an end.
