and when I use my XP CD to try to reinstall them it tells me that the current version of XP installed is newer than the one on the CD so installation will not continue (because of all the Windows updates, I'm sure). So now what can I do? Do a clean install and then do all the updates from scratch? Will I lose everything, or will it just copy over? Thanks.

It first searched for the files on C:, but didn't find them - that's when I got the CD. I also tried a System Restore, but none of my restore points would work, I tried every one.

I have tried reinstalling from add/remove programs - it doesn't work - the files are not on my hard drive and they will not install from the cd because the version is older than the one on my computer.

go into the control panel, add remover programs / windows components. Then go to accessories and uncheck it so the accessories uninstall. Then go back in and recheck accessories so they reinstall. The accessories should be stored in hidden files on your pc so you shouldn't have to use the cd.
