My daughter and I have volunteered at the local humane society since she was 3, and it's been a great experience, but I'd like her to get a sense of what it's like to help people who need it. We donate food, books, clothes, and toys through church already, but she never gets to see where it all goes. What sort of volunteer work can I find that we can do together, that will be safe for her, and will be helpful to others?

Talk to your public library.

Talk to your local hospital or home for elderly. You might be able to visit sick children, or isolated elderly people.

Did you know that many of these elderly people never get visitors? That could be a wonderful activity. You and your daughter might learn of a very interesting story from some of these folks. Just listening can be rewarding to both you and the elderly person.

You could get involved in a race/walk, especailly since many take place in the summer. Also, you could take her to a soup kitchen, where she can actually witness where the efforts are going. At my university, I volunteered to help make stuffed animals and we delivered them to a local hospital for the children there. Maybe there is something going on in your town that you could get involved with.

Adopt a Grandparent. You hang out at a nursing home with here because the "grandparents" family just pays the bills. visit the children's hospital. Not only will she be helping people, but she will be building an immunity!

Visit a nursing home. The residents really enjoy seeing children.

Check with your local nursing homes. The older folks love little children. Its nice to read books to them, chat with them, and just hold there hand. I did this with my girls and it gave them great respect for our elders; and the time I spent with them was great. Good luck!

Children's Hospital - take her dolls, and books to the other girls at the hospital - go read w/ her to the kids - you'll always find an audience.
