My daughters shitzu gave birth approx 3 and a half weeks ago. She eats well and I started giving her Vitamins with iron last week. Every time I take her outside she is constantly into the flower pots eating the dirt. Is she lacking in some other mineral?

Aside from the nutrient issue, do you put anything in your flowerpots? Like Malorganite? That stuff smells like dead fish and would probably be really appealing. Or other organic materials? It might just smell good to her...

I've never *had* to supplement my dog's food with anything extra, but she gets premium dog food and she also gets puppy food when she is nursing. It's richer in fats and vitamins, etc. than food made for bigger dogs.

Make sure she is on a good dog food, with meat as a first ingredient, and salt *way* down on the list. Corn is the first ingredient in many foods, and that just isn't good enough. Try her on some puppy dogfood as well. Check the ingredient list on your potting soil or the fertilizers/plant food that you might use, and see if there's anything in there that might just smell good to a dog...

I have heard of people craving strange things after childbirth as well... yes, even dirt. Sometimes it's just plain strange, and sometimes it *is* a deficiency.

If you call a vet and ask politely, they should be willing to talk to you about this for free. If not, call another vet. You'll find one.

Good luck again! You are a wonderful grandparent to those puppies!

to much of vitamins can be just as bad as to little, to much protien in a lactating b itch can cause mastitus, stop the vitamins and put her on puppy food, she should actually of been on puppy food from 4 weeks before the birth because of the extra vitamins and minerals in puppy food it would of been good for the pups and her, you will do her damage if you continue with those vitamins thats maybe the reason why she eating the dirt, check her mammarys for lumps and if there is any then you need to get her seen by a vet. also its about time your daughter started to wean the pups if she hasnt already, if you need any advice on weaning email me
