Speakers and an amp. I'd personally just go out to stores to hear systems.

What is your musical taste? How much are you willing to spend? How large is your listening room? Do you want a 2-channel stereo system, or a home theater to watch DVD's on as well as music?
Without knowing these areas of criteria, I cannot specifically answer your question. However, here are some basic steps to follow to put together a good system...
1) Listen, listen, listen! Hear systems in person and compare.
2) Find a privately owned hi-fi store (instead of the bid consumer electronic stores) in your area, and have them walk you through what you are looking for in an audio system. They will usually provide you with the one-on-one help you will want in order to get the system that will make you happy. Even the high-end audio stores have affordable gear that sounds good.

No highs? No lows? Must be Bose?
Bose, better sound through marketing.
Build a system with seperate pieces. You need an amp, speakers, and source equipment (tuner, cd player, etc)

for your car, go to like some small shop around town, because there, they reall care about you. but for home, try tweeter, it's a store best for hoem theater system i would like to suggest a powered subwoofer over passive
