Hi, did I understand this correctly? You are 12 yrs. old? Anyways..
My name is Sylvia and I am an interpreter and I speak 6 languages
It is super important that you try to talk to people who are
Spanish speaking natives. Like Mexicans , cubans, argentiniens, etc.Just learning from books and tapes is not good enough. Interact with people. Watch a spanish speaking channel on TV. Try to do something fun that involves learning the language. Shoot pool on the internet against a spanish speaking person that knows English as well. You can email me anytime if you have any more questions of this nature. Good luck....Sylvi

You really can't put a time limit on how long it takes to learn a second language. The older you are, the more difficult it will be. I started taking Spanish classes when I was 5 years old and I am not 18. I am very good in Spanish because I have always loved it but I am not fluent. You cannot become fluent in a second language by merely taking classes. The only way to REALLY become fluent in a language is to completely emerse yourself in it. Meaning that you need to visit a Spanish speaking country for a period of time so that you are forced to think and speak in that language only because people will not understand you if you try to speak English. That is the only way to really become fluent. As far as learning conversational Spanish, that can be taught in a classroom. Spanish is a very easy language and is much easier to learn as a second language than English. It all depends on the person, though. Some people find Spanish very difficult to learn, but to me, it really isn't. It just depends on the individual. There are also software programs you can buy to study with at home that teach Spanish.

I take it you mean fluently. Two years give or take a month. You can quote me on that.
Not that I can speak Spanish, and I can't. But if you got other people around speaking the language, learning it isn't all that difficult.

Hello,

If you mean fluently roughly about 4 years maximum, which also depends on their speed of learning.

If you want to teach your kids or relatives, i would recommend picture books, you can get them from the library. Kids respond well to pictures, that sticks well in their head and also some audio songs, Rememebr Dora the explorer

I sure do, its that way that i taught some of my friend's relatives.

I hope this is helpful.

Take care

I'm still trying to learn. I'm 53 and I started in 3rd grade- when we listened to 1/2 of it twice/wk on the radio in school. It depends on how it's taught, if he uses it outside the classroom, his ability. And did you know that kids- young kids (12 is older) - learn languages in a different part of the their brain then older kids or adults? Kids learn languages much easier when their toddlers! Wish someone had taught me a few.

My first language is Spanish, but I am a tutor in College, and I give classes to non Spanish Speakers. One good tip is to use a program called Rosetta Stone, also practice your spanish a lot. read books and read them aloud so you can hear yourself and accostume your ear to hear this new language. Watch some tv. One of my students learned in 2 years, and he is almost very fluent. Hope this help...Good Luck...Buena suerte...

if your about 12, take a spanish in middle school and in high school. if u want to learn it that bad, then i believe that by the end of your senior year in high school you'll be speaking spanish fluently.
if your bilingual, then it's a WHOLe lot easier to learn a 3rd language. don't give up! good luck
