Black tarry stools are usually caused by blood in the stool. Especially if it smells really tart and pungent.
You need to see a doctor for that one. Blood in the stools could mean a lot of different things, so there's no way to know without an exam.

I could be just a crack in his skin that bleeds when he uses the bathroom. This especially happens if their stools are hard. Red blood is fresh, if it appears dark or coffee ground like it means it is old. If it is a crack then there is nothing the doctor will do but recommend more fluids and fiber. If it is not a crack that you can see then you have every right to go back to the doctor to find out what is really wrong.

Diet. Same thing that could cause black tarry stools in a 42 year old.

Black, tarry stools are a sign of gastrointestinal bleeding and should be evaluated by a physician ASAP. While it's possibly something he ate (licorice?), it's a common enough sign of bleeding that you shouldn't take a chance.

I don't want to panic you- but unless he's been eating tar, I'd get him to a doctor. Sounds like bleeding to me. (Actually, if he's eating tar I'd see someone about that too.)
