being part of a group, identity, something "higher" than just self indulgence.
Security, feeling needed. Being mentored, mentoring...

if youre poor and in a bad neighborhood it can mean protection. Depending on the type of gang it can sort of be like a support group. The gang members become ur family and look out for you and in alot of poor places being in a gang gets you respect. If you need something they'll help u get it (usually through illegal means) and you feel obligated to help the group anyway you can as well. Gangs can be addicting, most that get into one dont get out until they are relocated, get arrested or start a family, or are already on the low point or outside of the gang class system (yes there is one) and feel like they can do better without it.

I used to be in a gang, and I spent most of my teens fighting, running from cops, running from opposite gang members who were trying to kill me in 10 and 15 on 1 situations, and I can tell you right now, that the concept of "protection", and how "strong" you'll feel while being in a gang is what drives people to join them. Once they're in, and living the life, it's a heck of a lot harder to get out, especially if you're good at it and you know what to do to move up. My advice to anyone looking to join a gang, is to get as far away as you possibly can, it will only destroy your life. You think the initiation to get INTO the gang is hard, try getting out. If there's some 14 year old out there reading this and is saying "i'm not going to leave once i get in", you're stupid for thinking that. In 10 years you're goign to wanna be married and have kids, and the last thing you want is to not be able to do that because no woman wants to marry a gang member. She doesn't want her kids around that, and no kid should ever have to be subjected to that.

There is no worth about being in a gang. It started to be a bad thing years ago when drugs became the way of supporting themselves. The kids I see in these little town "gangs" are nothing but wanna be's strutting around with their pants dang near off. I can see gangs in big citys to protect their neighborhoods and turf, but not in small midwest cow towns. Get a life all you wanna be's or you may wind up in the penitentiary where real gang members can pimp your body to others that like young tender boys like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all it is far from a "fad" .. gangs have existed in society from the time when we first had societies. People are attracted to it because, simply, people have a deep need to feel a part of a group. This is another thing that dates back far into human history and probably comes from the instinctual knowledge that there is strength in numbers.

I think kids join gangs when their family life is not great.
Gangs stick up for each other and it gives them a sense of belonging. Gangs have always been around. Probably always will be.

Gangs are a unique form of immaturity but 1 reason probably would be if a child isnt heard in the homestead he looks to his so called "friends" for understanding without fully understanding what could happen.
