I have a green fig bush outside of my townhome. The figs are ripe (according to my friend) but I have no clue how to prepare them for regular eating nor do I have any recipes.

Fresh Fig Cookies

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 cup fresh figs, peeled and chopped
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
Cream sugar and shortening and add beaten egg. Sift dry ingredients and blend with creamed mixture. Fold in figs and nuts. Drop by spoonfuls on greased sheet. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes. Makes about 3 dozen.

Fresh Fig and Green Tomato Salad with Basil

Serves 6 to 8
This simple salad recipe adapted from Fig Heaven: 70 Luscious Recipes for the World’s Most Luscious Fruit (William Morrow 2004) is a fresh way to make the best of the end of summer tomatoes and start the fall season with delicious figs.

INGREDIENTS:
4 green zebra tomatoes, cored and cut into ½ inch wedges
4 large, firm ripe figs, any variety, stems tripped, cut into ½ inch wedges
½-cup hand-torn fresh basil leaves
½-cup paper-thin lengthwise slivers red onion
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1-tablespoon red wine vinegar

PREPARATION:
Combine the tomatoes, figs, basil and onion in a serving bowl.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Drizzle the salad with the olive oil and splash the vinegar over the top. Gently fold the ingredients together. Serve at room temperature.

I like figs with a little goat cheese...just wash and cut fig in 1/2...put a little goat chesse on top..yum
