I was searching on Travelocity on hotels to nyc and it is soooo expensive per night. I dont even know what area I should stay in. I then saw New Jersey hotels that are way cheaper. I will be renting a car so I was wondering if all this is worth the extra savings. I will be landing in la guardia airport, commute to new jersey to the hotel and then drive to nyc. I was wondering if new jersey (newark) is that far from nyc and if there were any suggestions for me. Thank you! Its my very first Nyc trip!

you might have a hard time of it. not only will you be paying to commute back and forth, and for gas. once you get into nyc you have to worry about parking. parking is damn near impossible on the street and can be very expensive in a parking lot. you really might want to consider just paying to stay in nyc or check some of the other boroughs, brooklyn, queens, etc.

I live in NYC and most people I know commute about 45 min - 1.5 hours (one way) to work every day. My commute is 2 hrs 15 minutes one way, it is not that bad if you use public transport, because you get to read and listen to music and sleep if the train is safe enough (like Metro-North or LIRR). A lot of people commute to the city, but make sure you can commute by train not car, as parking is limited and very expensive plus there are traffic jams on every corner. Many leave their car at train stations and then take the train. It does mean you'll have to wake up early and won't be getting home until late (I get up before 6 am and never home before 8pm) and commuting is very very tiring. So it is not unreasonable but of course it is up to you to decide what matters most - short commute or affordable place to live. Good luck!

Since you are flying into LaGuardia (Queens), you should maybe think about staying on the eastside (Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island) rather than getting all the way to Jersey and having to get back to Queens for your return flight. Plus, depending on where you stay in Queens, you will have good subway access to Manhattan.

As far as a rental car, I wouldn't bother. A car will just be something extra to worry about. I live in NYC and have absolutely no need for a car.

Good luck.

Unless you are planning to go outside of the metropolitan area renting a car is not worth it. Public transportation can take you almost anywhere and rather quickly. Parking in Manhattan is costly, and very time-consuming. Living in manhattan is costly, too. But I wouldn't suggest NJ, rather stay in Queens, it's a quick train ride to the city. Since you know the regular hotel price from different sites, now you should bid on priceline, and choose to stay in Queens. I am positive you'll get a great price!

Don't take the car into city!!!! You won't find parking, especially with alternative side of parking(if you miss the street sign you will get ticketed) and
parking lots start at $50 and more expensive at touristy areas.

Take PATH train from NJ to NY. Then get unlimited MTA/subway card. or the Red Decker Buses- go to all the tourist places

yeah that is a great way to save. Because the commute from newark, Nj to NYC is only 19 mintues depending on traffic. But I woulldnt take the car to NYC to much to deal with ,get a bus schdule or take a taxi or just wlak around once you feel confident enough that you wont get loss or get loss and you will discover another side of the city that you wont know about for a tourist map !!!!! Hope this helps !

c j b has good answer. Not really worth it to drive in because of traffic and parking. Buses have special lanes during rush hour so they get in much faster. You don't need the car in the city.
