Yes, it's illegal. But all police can do is cite you for operating a vehicle without a bond or insurance. You can still drive away, but if you don't get insurance, eventually your license will be susupended/revoked and you won't be able to register your car without proof of insurance.

It is illegal to drive without insurance, but you will not be arrested for it. Generally, the citation will be dismissed if you can present proof of insurance to the court. The only time I have seen someone arrested, was when that person caused an accident and had no insurance; however, they also did not have a valid driver's license, which was probably the reason for the arrest.

It is definitely illegal here in California. Most other states have made it illegal as well. Even if it *is* legal to drive without insurance in your area, it's still a darned good idea to have at least basic coverage anyway. If you're involved in any accident (keyword "any") where you are found at fault, you can be held personally liable for any and all damages incurred by the other party. Insurance is a stopgap to help prevent a minor incident from completely ruining your life. It can also help prevent liens on your home or money being taken from your paycheck in restitution if you're involved in a large accident where you're found at fault.

It is illegal to drive without insurance. My mom was given a ticket and told to go straight home. She brought her insurance card to court and the charges were dropped. It never made sense to me, either. Why let them drive away? I guess they're no more dangerous than the rest of us, but it just seems skewed.

Yes it's illegal. They can impound your car and put you in jail for driving with no insurance. If you get in a wreck, or hurt someone while driving with no insurance, you could go to jail for a very long time.

Yes, the law is the law, and most states, maybe all, require you to carry insurance either on yourself as the driver, or on the vehicle being driven. Consult your local DMV for details!

it is an INFRACTION (the lowest level 'crime') to not have insurance. An infraction is only punishable by a TICKET and a FINE - no jail or prison time. Other examples of infractions include parking and speeding tickets.

is illegal, so you don't get someone hurt and get free, although you can get a lesser insurance or full cover, depends on your choice but at least the third party is necessary

yes. and they got a ticket. Just like parking. They give you a ticket for parking at an expired meter, but they don't take your car.
