1- Eat right. Lot's of fruits and vegetables, lean protein and minimize unhealthy fats.
2- Try Yoga or Pilates. If there's a gym near you with a pool, check to see if they have water aerobics classes or the like. Many professional athletes with knee injuries do their aerobic training in pools during rehab, including running in place with weights, etc., it greatly reduces impact on your joints.

The best thing to do is to work the muscles you have there. The muscles on the back of your thigh extend your knee to make your leg straight. The muscles of the butt and love handle reigion also do this but they are major hip abductors (bringing legs apart and back some).
I also am working on these areas, I am going to buy a work out video when I find the right one. As for now, running, leg extensions, jumps, and practicing balance keep me using the muscles in that area.

Try walking and eating less calories. The best way is eating small meals more often and try to stay active. Start by walking at least 10 minutes a day and work your way to a mile and them some. You will see results before you know it.

Crunches. Lift your upper body and knees at the same time and go as slow as possible. Don't know why it works but it does. For me anyways...

There is not healthy way to lose or gain weight "fast". You need to do fat burning exercises, like cardio., to take off the fat, and strength training exercises to build muscle.
It is very important to do cardio. Your heart needs it.
