Unfortunately, that's what stereotypes to do dog breeds. So many pits have been mistreated and then dumped because people want them to be vicious, but the dog they get simply isn't. Shame on those people.
My husband quit breeding his pits because he always had people wanting "mean dogs", and he simply wouldn't sell to them. When the market flooded with them, he realized that it was a losing battle trying to improve on the temperament of the breed when so many were out there just breeding them for quick profit as "guard dogs"...
It can be the breeding and genetics, but most often, it is the training. If you breed a "mean-natured" dog to another "mean-natured" dog, you will get mean puppies. Careful breeding is *so* very important to the future of the pits.
Cheers to you for your friendly (and proud of it) pit bulls!

The problem is that people who don't want a mean angry don't tend not to buy pit bulls in the first place. They have such a reputation now that most people wanting them want them because of the rep. They've also been bred for years to be fighting dogs (illegal but it still goes on). You never know if the pit you bought is a nice dog or will mature to be unpredicable or vicious. It's not worth the risk.
Also be aware some areas have banned them completely. Your homeowner's insurance is often higher if you own a breed like a pit just because they are on average so dangerous.

Becasue they think it is cool to own a "gaurd dog" And for some reason they think that gaurd dogs are aggressive towards people. They should not be they should just be more aware of what is going on around them and be able to take down and hold a person until given further direction by their handler.
Pitts are great dogs I love the shape and form of them. They have such a great spirit. It is sad what people have made them into.

I think people wanting a guard dog go overboard when getting a pit and trying to "train" it to be a guard dog. Many probably have no real training experience and train them to be mean/aggressive instead of obedient, not realizing the difference. One of my dogs is a pit, and she is the sweetest, most gentle dog I've ever had. It is a shame they have such a bad reputation.

I totally agree with you. I have 2 dogs and one is a pit. He is the sweetest dog I have ever known. The other day my 5 & 1/2 month old niece grabbed his upper shoulder for a whole minute all he did was stand very still and when she finanly let go he walked away.

I agree. The Pitts get such a horrible, horrible reputation and 9 times out of 10 if the dog is aggressive it's because of the HUMANS not the dog itself. Dog fights and pitt bull breeding runs rapid in my area and it's sickening. Just sickening. I'm glad you are a good Pitt parent!!!

Because the owners need an extension to their lil egos? You can train (abuse) any dog to be aggressive. We had a 10 y.o Boston Terrier.. she was agressive after her first litter and stayed that way to strangers til she died. No training there, just protective loyalty.

Why do SOME dog owners make their dog aggressive. I have an amstaff and he is a real sweetie. If he met you today he would think you love each other and are old dear friends.

I agree. Any animal can be nice, and any animal can be aggressive. It all depends on the owner. People should stop thinking it's the dog's fault.
