Pay attention. Start a journal so that you can honestly see what you are taking into your body in terms of food types and quantities.

Once you are able to realize this then you can begin to alter what you are currently doing with something better.

Always make sure you eat. Do not skip meals. Drink plenty of water. The more water you drink the better your digestive and elimination systems work (and all other systems of the body) and then you won't be harbor waste products in your body any longer than necessary.

Do not drink while eating. It dilutes the digestive juices which can cause indigestion and improper elimination and assimilation of your nutrients and foods.

Eat fresh as much as possible ... not boxed foods and cans.

Stay away from fast foods on a regular basis.

Eat until you are satisfied, not until you are full.

To start: drink nothing but water. If you normally drink coffee, that's fine, just switch to black. When you drink your calories there's no fiber to slow down the absorption and you don't have to burn any calories to absorb them, so cut out any sodas, fruit juices and the like.

Don't go longer than 3 hours without eating something or your metabolism will start to drop and you'll go into fat storage mode. Keep the meals/snacks reasonably portioned and make sure there's either some protein or some calcium in each one.

Look at the ingredients of packaged food. If you see high-fructose corn syrup, don't eat it. It's basically sugar that gets turned into fat almost immediately unless you go jogging right after you eat it, but even worse it shuts off the natural hormone in your body that makes you feel full, which is why you can drink a gallon of Coke and feel like your stomach's empty. It's hard to avoid, because food companies have been using it like it's going out of style, but do your best. Organic foods are usually free of it.

If you really feel like getting in shape, I recommend you head down to a bookstore and pick up a copy of The Abs Diet for about 20 bucks. It's nutrition plus exercise and most of the advice above comes from that. I got on it and have never felt better. I got my mom on it and her cholesterol dropped 30 points in six weeks.
