So many good ideas to try in the other answers. You may also want to check with your doctor, there may be an underlying medical condition causing your insomnia.
What I do: I get insomnia so bad that a couple times a week I don't sleep at all. Then every couple of weeks I crash for about twelve hours. I just go with the flow now, I'm tired of trying to fight it. Nothing I have tried works for long. Nothing. I just have accepted the fact that I don't sleep like other people do.

I also suffered from insomnia for most of my life, in phases, just like you, but the last 2 years were unbearable. I was both panicky and miserable.
A friend kindly introduced me to an all natural juice with medical validation. I agreed to try it. I was on it for 2 days and started sleeping through the night, and within a week had eliminated other problems like headaches and heartburn. I was sold! This is an adaptogen which goes to work on all auto-immune deficiencies and there are 72 clinical studies published on pubmed.org under Lycium Barbarum to back it.
I have never felt better, more energy and sleeping like a baby every night. I wish every insomniac would try this because I am that sure it can help!

you need to develop some sleep hygiene. You need to get a night time routine and stick to it. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. avoid anything with caffeine after late afternoon. Do not eat/drink a couple hours before going to sleep. Avoid watching tv an hour or before going to bed. If you can't fall asleep within 20 mins get up and do something like read...and try to go to sleep in 20-30 mins. Exercise this helps insomnia and depression. Depression and suicidal thoughts are actually more common than you would think for people in your age range. If you don't think you can talk to your parents about it, talk to your guidence counsler and they will help you. Talking over things with someone who can help you problem solve and show you a different prospective is more helpful then you may realize. From one girl to another girls are crazy at your age. One day they are your friend, the next they are not for no apparent reason. Find some new activities and meet some new friends.

I have it.
I go through phases too.
Some last months where I barely sleep 3 hours a night and usually wake up during that.
What ever you do don't take naps, it will really screw you up. Try to keep a regular schedule and drive careful.
Try headphones (the type for shooting ranges) and a sleep mask . No light No sound. Usually it is the constant racing thoughts in my head ( no voices :)that keep me up but when I finally get to sleep I don't want environmental things to wake me.
You could try Tylenol pm, it is light and could help, just don't keep using it.
Good luck!

Stop all caffiene and drink milk. Don't watch TV when winding down as it stimulates instead of relaxes. Get more exercise. Make yourself get up at the same time every morning whether or not you've slept well. Stay away from high sugar, low fiber foods.

I have it too. I just answer Yahoo questions until I get sleepy.
Or, I'll play GTA for hours until I'm too tired to go on.
Drink lots of water, that regulates your body temp. Also stay away from caffine and chocolate and sugar.

Drink some chamomile tea an hour or so before you're supposed to head to bed.
