The bad thing about those diseases is that if you let it go long enough it can cause lesions on the esophagus, causing cancer. Which, I would say, can be fatal. Nexium heals erosions on the esophagus as well as prevents them. Other acid reducers, to the best of my knowledge, only prevent the acidity. Really, you can take over th counter meds, or drink alot of milk to alleviate the pain and burning but does it really work? No. You should get a prescription and get in under control otherwise it will control you.

Important info about PPI's (Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Prevacid) - Take on an empty stomach (1/2 hour before meal or 2 hrs after meal) otherwise you lose 50% of the efficacy. Prilosec OTC works just as well as prescription. Take med every day for at least a few months (or as long as doc says to)

This is a natural program that you can try to cure your acid reflux http://acidreflux.toptips.org
Acid reflux disease, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs due to the coexistence of several medical and lifestyle conditions. Physiological factors that trigger GERD include lower esophageal sphincter (LES) hypotonia (the gradual weakening of the LES), along with retrograde flow of stomach contents into the esophagus, and the level of sensitivity of the esophageal mucus to the reflux content.

See a doctor and take the medication. It takes about 2-3 months to heal the erosiveness. OTC medications aren't as strong as the one's prescribed by your doctor!

If you don't want to use medication, my doctor recommended sleeping on a wedge pillow raising my esophagus above my stomach. That worked pretty good.
