When I check on Google it says they are free until I try to download, then they all seem to want a "One off payment"

Try Download.com. I have Ad-aware. It gets rid of adware and spyware and it is totally free. Same with Asquared. :)

Well i would buy one if i were you, personally i prefer mcAfee. I f you cant afford one then you could get zone alarm firewall i believe that's free. but you really do need a current anti virus to keep up with the latest viruses out there. go to http://www.iopus.com/guides/free-firewall.htm P.S Don't forget to disable your windows firewall if you have Windows XP service pack 2 because its not clever to have 2 firewalls running at the same time it may cause conflicts

Try going to www.download.com And researching it there. You'll find both pay and free programs for both types. The best firewall program I've come across is "Zonealarm" Google that one, or you can find it at download.com. They've got an excellent free version, and a pay version with whiz-bang features.

yes there is, go to AVG Free Edition website, a very good one to have and its FREE!
Just go to Google search type in AVG and it will take you directly there.
Hope it works for you like it does for me AND all the other clever ones that also installed zone alarm, Zone alarm works nicely with AVG and Clamwin, which is by the way also a free antivirus programm.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 , this is completely free, as for firewalls, with Windows XP, you should get a free firewall if you have SP2 (service pack 2). Go to security center to activate it.

AVG or Anti Virus Guard is free and offers excellent protection. I use it and have had no trouble
