The forerunner of the DTMF (dual tone multi frequency ) push button was the rotary dial. The rotary dial used pulses to send it's signals instead of tones (one pulse for the digit 1, two pulses for the digit 2 etc and ten pulses for 0) The standard rotary dial started with the one as the first digit and zero as the last. This was necessary as the design of the dial was spring loaded and the more you moved it the more pulses you got. When the DTMF dial was created and to avoid confusion or wrong numbers being dialed they kept the sequence the same.

The calculator came from an adding machine which looked similar to the numeric keypad on a PC keyboard. It's layout was that way since adding machines in the 1960's. The telephone actually has a * and # as well as A,B,C & D, although those are not installed anymore as you can see. The extra keys make neither compatible for duplicating the layout, so the manufacturers saw no reason to make them the same.

To make life that much more complicated, of course. It only shows how talented we are that we can function on both out of memory and touch. Of course that doesn't mean I like it, just that those of us that can enter by touch on both, are good. This is a wonderful question that I have asked many a time and have yet to get an answer beyond 'Engineers! Go figure!' or some such thing. If you get a good answer, let me know!! Good question!!
