Beer contains a lot of carbohydrate. How you react to carbohydrate depends on your metabolism. If it makes you put on weight, lay off the beer.

It depends of how much beer a person drinks.
one beer a day is fine.

If someone drinks a six-pack a day then they will be putting their body in jeopardy particulary their liver.

Or if someone binge drinks over the weekend and has 6 or more drinks a day this is just as dangerous as heavy daily drinking.

Heavy beer drinkers do tend to develop a 'beer belly' over time. A large belly is a risk factor for having a heart attack, developing diabetes, developing high blood pressure just to name a few serious health consequences.

Do you know a lot of alcoholics?

Alcoholics may also tend to subsititute alcohol for food and also tend to smoke cigaretttes. This maybe why some alcoholics are slim.

Beer contains empty calories, meaning that you are taking in calories (figure about 110 per "Light" beer), but not receiving any nutrients like you would from food. If you are drinking it moderately, plus eating well and getting some exercise, you should be okay. Some alcoholics, like my father-in-law, are skinny because they don't eat (or cannot afford to eat after they have satisfied their alcohol craving) The fat ones probably are drinking and eating too much.

No, it should be had in moderation, that's all. Beer has some very good things inside it that can be good for the system. It just shouldn't be had in excess. Just like everything else on earth, if you over do something, it will come back to haunt you eventually. Drink a couple a week, if you like it, just not a couple in the same amount of hours. Good question!!

Like they say, everything in moderation. I recently read an article in New Scientist saying that anything you'd consider bad for you i.e. alcohol (as it's a poison), radiation, in the form of x-rays for most people and sunburn can actually be good for you because the damage received causes cells to regenerate, usually to a better state than before the damage was done!

1/2 pint of ordinary beer (3 to 4%abv) is about one unit of alcohol.UK recommendation is a maximum of 4 units/day.
That 1/2 pint of beer will contain about 100 calories (KCal)
If you consume the maximum recommended amount it will provide about 400KCal which is a large proportion of the KCal needed, so you will probably put on weight.
The main physical problem with alcohol is its effect on the liver and liver failure is not a pleasant condition.
Because alcohol provides so many calories and because alcoholics have to spend so much money on alcohol, they often neglect their diet. This results in malnourishment and vitamin deficiency.

Beer in moderation is OK, unless you suffer from high uric acid.
Uric acid is the cause of gout which is very painfull.
Uric acid is formed in crystalline form which is insolubale and apart from gout when passing uric acid with urine its crystaline form is what cause those pains as if one is urinating glass shards.
Of all alchaholic bevarages beer produces most uric acid.

I have heard that one beer a day can help keep your kidneys flushed out. But I can't stand the taste and really don't know how anyone can.

You have your choices of beer - from ' light to regular to mid-grade to high-test ' - all with different calorie values - AND taste differences. Beer is all natural - barley, hops, etc. and they are good for you. Just drink in moderation and responsibily !!
