There are ligamentous structure that run along the posterior margin of the vertebral bodies, just in front of the spinal canal. When a disc herniates (or protrudes) backwards, it can cause compression of the nerve roots within the spianl canal. Subligamentous means that the heriated disc or protruded disc has not "broken" through the ligaments, but is "bulging" it itward into the spinal canal.
