It shouldn't hurt. As long as your numb (and they numb you the same way as when you get fillings done), you shouldn't feel anything.

Don't listen to them, it doesn't hurt anymore than a filling on a cavity. I had really bad teeth... I had my first root canal at age 9 and didn't cry or anything, I had a numbing shot , not laughing gas or anything besides the shot and after wards I didn't even need any pain medicine. Get this my appointment was at like 11:00 that morning and I was at the lake swimming by 3:00 that evening. They don't hurt, don't worry. Good Luck!!

Okay, I know first hand the answer to this question. In 3rd grade I had to get a root canal on my front tooth.
What happened to me is that I had to lay down under this huge, bright, light and put on huge sunglasses. Then they put this jelly stuff on a Q-tip and put it on my tooth and gum (it numbed 1/2 of my face!!!!). Then they did they work. It was weird cause you could hear the metal thing scraping on the tooth (not pleasent).
I don't think it hurt. But, I was totaly scared, nonetheless.
Once it was done it felt like I had a HUGE mouth. But, when you look in the miriror you really don't.
Afterwards I got to go shopping! Ha,ha.
Oh and it is really hard to talk when half you face is numbed.
Bye

Surprisingly enough, these days a root canal is pretty pain free. About the worst you will experience the the initial needle poke for the anesthetic. I sat awake through one and was shocked by how quick and pain-free the procedure was. The doctor numbed me at 6:05 and I was back in my car headed home at 6:45.
Just make sure you find a doctor who uses the precision boring tools and DOES NOT use hand files. (Although it's probably hard to find anyone who uses the files anymore.)

Most of the time no. But you only hear that it does because when it does hurt it really is intense, but usually resolves a few days after the procedure. Patients in pain are louder than those who have easy root canals.

Nah, they give you Valium to take before the work, knock you out during the work, and give you pain killers for after the Novocaine wears off. Did you know that they can do root canals in one day now? I had one done that way - people older than me said it used to take several dental visits.

It is different. They still numb it out pretty well, but, after the procedure is done, and the drugs wear off, it hurts alot.

My dad always said it hurts your wallet more than it hurts your mouth. Yes it is different, it is uncomfortable but doesn't hurt. Depends on your pain tolerance.
