You can upgrade, but you need to create a new XP Pro CD with Service Pack 2 - the process is called slipstreaming. See:

It should still work....I have always used the SP2 version when doing the upgrade...I would see if you can find someone who has the SP2 disc and use their disc instead and make sure you use your serial number...THERE IS NOTHING WRONG OR ILLEGAL WHEN DOING THIS!!!!! I just have to say that because Yahoo slapped me last week for not being specific enough.

My only (slight) concern is that the installer will tell you that you are attempting to upgrade to a lesser version but I'm not 100% sure. The SP2 upgrade for XP home and PRO were the same...so I'm hoping that the upgrader is smart enough to just install the PRO networking upgrades and not cause any issues.

***UPDATE***

Please ignore Thunder2sys, he/she has absolutely NO FRIGGIN clue what he/she is speaking about. Look at the requirements on the XP PRO Upgrade box!!! What is the last operating system listed?? Hmmmm, go figure...it is XP Home!!! I have two copies sitting directly in front of me DUMBA$$!!

You can not upgrade like you are thinking. XP pro will not do an upgrade of XP home, its going to reformat the disk and reinstall. so you need to backup all your data first.

no favor to bypass professional. From what you've reported, you do not have any choose for the pro version. i do not even comprehend why you pick to purchase XP. in case you'll get window's updates ok, then that is been examined as actual. you should look at figuring out to purchase more advantageous RAM and/or updating your video card, relying on why you imagine that is "risky". in case you particularly imagine there's a favor to purchase XP, do no longer purchase XP retail... it will fee a small fortune! you should be in a position to discover used actual variations for ninety% lower than retail. call round a number of the community mom & pop pc shops. Lot's of folk promote their previous software. although you do, do not attempt to positioned Vista on that device!!! From the spec's you've offered, your device purely would not meet the minimum criteria for Vista. .

I would not consider what you're doing as an upgrage unless, you're planning on doing networking from groups..Windows xp home with sp2 is equal to xp pro, except that?
