He is crate trained, and only does this occassionally. He usually goes outside. Sometimes I let him out to go, and he pees, but doesn't poop. He just walks around in circles and explores the yard.l How can I get it into his head that he shouldn't poo in the house. Do all small dogs do this.

Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not poop/pee in the house out of mere spite (i.e. because you've "made them mad") -- Spite is a human emotion, and dogs don't have it in them to hold that kind of silly grudge.

It is not uncommon for dogs to get "distracted" while they're out in the yard, especially young dogs. Your best bet is to take him out on a leash, if you have to, and keep him focused. If you know he's got to go, take the opportunity to associate a word with the action -- tell him to "hurry up", or "go potty" -- keep telling him to do this until he does it. When he does, praise him and reward him with a small treat or tons of praise when he's finished (whatever motivates him best) -- he'll soon learn that when you say the word, good things happen when he does as he's told. :)

Unfortunately, you can't punish him for pooping in the house unless you catch him in the act. If you do, make a loud, distracting noise (yelling "no!" or the like) and take his little butt straight outside. Praise him if/when he finishes out there.

If you just leave him out in the yard to potty on his own, he will continue to be distracted (unless he really has to go) and the problem will not go away. You have to retrace your steps to when he was a small puppy and work from that angle for awhile. Eventually, he'll learn to do his thing outside, and hopefully on command!

Good luck!

It's definately harder to train a smaller dog. I have a yorkie, a maltese-shi tzu and a collie and the yorkie never got completely potty trained. The maltese shi tzu is getting better, but still goes in the house sometimes. The collie was trained in about a week.

Somtimes when they are in a bigger space they have some nervousness - although you might not see it this way. My miini-daschund does the same thing, so I make sure I close off some of the bedroom doors and stuff. When you walk your dog, you have to keep walking it until it poops (they will eventually go) and then give lots of praise.

Not only small dogs do this
you have to walk him out on a leash for at least 10 minutes and he should "go". If he poops in the house let him have it. Yell at him smack him and put her in him crate for about a half hour, then you can let her out. My dog used to do this until I let her have it. I went to the vet about this and they said it will not hurt her to let her have it. Soon your dog will learn .

Good luck,Briana

I HAVE A YORKIE AND HE IS 2 YRS. IT TOOK HIM ABOUT A YR TO BE HOUSE TRAINED. AND I DID THE CRATE THING. YOU HAVE TO BE PATIENT AND WHEN HE DOES IT SCOLD HIM TELL HIM NO. AND TAKE HIM OUTSIDE. MY YORKIE WILL SOMETIMES DO IT BUT WHEN HE DOES HE KNOW HE DID WRONG AND HE GOES TO HIS CAGE. TAKE HIM OUTSIDE WHEN YOU GET UP AND ABOUT EVERY HOUR. WHEN YOU ARE TAKING HIM OUT KEEP SAYING DO YOU NEED TO GO OUTSIDE OR LETS GO POTTY. IT SOUNDS LIKE HE'S NOT STAYING OUT LONG ENOUGH.

Small dogs are notoriously hard to housetrain, yorkies are one of the absolute worst. That said, I had a yorkie and did get him trained, but it took a long, long time.

Keep it outside until it poops

What goes in must come out at a certain time.

Then reward the pooch once it does it ....IMMEDIATELY

Dogs love to **** around smelly places too!

We have two poms and when they go in the house it is as punishment for us for something we've done. Left them alone or scolded them for something.
