It may just be your true preference. It's like watching movies. People have a preference on what they'll sit through - action, sci fi, romance, thriller.

You may never be good with fiction. I know I read fiction for enjoyment. Frankly I don't really care if I retain it. Just having a general idea of the storyline is all I really care about.
On the other hand I find technical literature very dry, almost to the point of being boring. And I worked in high tech most of my adult life.

I believe this goes to your personal lifestyles. If you are a person who believes and facts and that you are personally a social person, you will most likely to like non fiction books because the stories or the issues presented are of factual case. If you are a person who likes fantasy or more so that you are a believer of something unatural or out of the body experience, most likely you will like to read fiction books, because you have a higher imagination.
It's not to say that you don't have any imagination at all, but those who likes to read fiction books tends to be those who are highly imaginative than other. You yourself is a person of social being, meaning that you like to get involved in a situation that is not imaginative and it is factual.
Look around you how many friends do you have? That should tell you whether you are a social being or you tend to keep it to yourself.

I know what you mean. I read books, but I just hate fiction. People ask me if I've read this and that book, but I have to answer NO all the time. I love to read books about Chinese, Greek, Japanese, and Mexican history. I love to read books about "How to do stuff". I read biographies from time to time. I'm just not interested in fiction. Some people have even told me I don't really read, just becaus eI don't read "the classics". You should read whatever you enjoy.

Your interest in the subject matter will influece your ability to read the text. Don't worry about it too much. Enjoy your non-fiction!
Check out the young adult book section (near the Harry Potter books).

I go through phases like this...usually when I'm tense and anxious, or when I'm fed up with the way women/people like me are portrayed in popular books...don't worry about it. As long as you are reading something, you are improving your mind.
However, if you are determined to try fiction, consider trying a new genre. When I can't concentrate, I find that fantasy or horror books often capture my attention...my brother feels the same way about futuristic sci-fi novels, and my mother the same way about mysteries.

Fiction books make you use your imagination, and you have to guess what the author is thinking, Non-fiction are real story that you can relate better to.

You have a hard time reading fiction because you do not like reading 'lies' or 'untruths'. Not all Non-fiction is truth, but all Fiction is certainly untrue. In your brain, you do not like that, which is a good character trait.
