Many dogs howl at sirens. Sirens sound a little like a dog howl, so that could have something to do with it. In the wild if a wolf is lost, he howls and another wolf howls back and he follows the sound. Your dog is just being nice to the other "dog".

I have had dogs my whole life. For the first time I have a "siren hound". This dog is a Golden mix that will only howl at fire engines & ambulances. Apparently police sirens are not worthy of her notice. When she hears one coming she runs to the window & throws her head back & howls until the siren is long gone. It is cute during the day, and not so cute at 3 in the morning.

A lot of dogs howl at the sounds of sirens. I know m dog does it and he's a Pomeranian. It is because the sirens also have a higher sound frequency other then the one that humans hear. That sound can be painful to the dog because it is at a higher frequency. If your dogs acts like it is really in pain though every time you hear a siren make sure the dog is in the house so he/she won't be able to hear the sound as good.

This is great! My dog does the same thing! I've had him for 4 months now and he's almost 2yr old. I wasn't sure what to think the first time he did it, but the neighbor dogs do it too, so I figured he was just going with what they were doing. Guess I was wrong! My dog now hears it and looks at me like "Can I howl Mom?" and if I say go ahead, he howls, if I say no, he doesn't. He's a good boy! (Most days!)

My English Cocker Spaniel and my Lab/Rott mix both howl at sirens. And so do most of the other dogs in my neighborhood.
I don't know if they don't like the sound, or if it sounds like a howl to them. But it is perfectly normal.

Most dog breeds will howl when they hear a siren. The decible level of the siren hurts their ears, that is why they howl.

I've seen other dogs howling at sirens. My guess is that there's something about the sound that hurts their ears.

Dogs ears are much more sensitive then our own, so the high pitch whale can actually make thre ears hurt, it's there way of expressing there dislike for the sound. Its not a breed trait it a dog trait. My cocker chases shadows from a flash light, we just figure she's weird.
