Christ will return visibly, with a loud command.
There will be an unmistakable cry from an angel.
There will be a trumpet fanfare such as has never been heard.
Believers in Christ who are dead will rise from their graves.
Believers who are alive will be caught up in the clouds to meet Christ.
Rev. 16:14-16 (NKJV)
For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. [15] "Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame." [16] And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.
___________
As far as quitting everything to follow some guy that says he is the Christ...
Matthew 24:23-27 (NKJV)
Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it. [24] For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. [25] See, I have told you beforehand. [26] Therefore if they say to you, 'Look, He is in the desert!' do not go out; or 'Look, He is in the inner rooms!' do not believe it. [27] For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

The answer to your question is pretty simple. In the "end times" as stated in the New Testament, Jesus warns about people doing things in His name and ones claiming to be the Messiah. So the person Joe that you are talking about will most likely be one of the many false prophets that will come along.
I personally would not follow them as I already have Jesus to follow. If I did what kind of convinction do I have about the truth of God and Jesus? Not a very good one I can tell you that!
Read the Bible, especially the New Testament and Revelations that should help explain where I and others that have answered this question are coming from. In there it states that He will come back with trumpets and shouting. This will not be a quiet event and you will know when it happens.
There is a small group of Christians that call themselves preterist that believe that Christ has already come, however after carefully reading Revelation you will see that everything that is to happen upon the Lord's return has not. So that idea is pretty much unfounded.

The Messiah will come after the devil comes pretending to be Jesus deceiving people who have the mark of the beast ( the rapture; those thinking that the devil is Jesus )
Revelation 13:11-18. The horns mention in verse 11 represent power, this is the devil. The devil caused wonders, vers 12. Verse 14, the devil causes people to believe that he is Jesus and they worship the the devil by the wonders the devil causes.
Verse 18, the number 666 represents the 6th vile, the 6th seal, 6th dispensation.

Jesus seemed to think His coming would be noticed "as the lightning shines from the east even to the west". I'm pretty sure we'll all know, and there will be no chance at all of making a mistake about it.
Meantime, I'm definitely gonna keep an eye on that guy named Joe. (Fortunately, since I'm disabled and live on SSI, I don't have to worry about a job. Hey, maybe Joe, if He is Jesus, can even heal me!) Even if He isn't Jesus, Himself, He's pretty fascinating. If He's a fake, I will depend on God's spirit to watch over me and let me know when to leave. And if He is, then I want to be close by when He does reveal Himself (as the lightning shines from the west even to the east).

Have you never heard of the antichrist??? When the world is coming to an end there will be lots of people like Joe who step up and say that they are the Messiah but don't believe them. It says that a trumpet will sound and all the Christians will rise up to Heaven with the almighty one!!!

If you are still in a flesh body, Christ has not returned.
Mat 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

What about Criss Angel? He can walk on water. He can levitate. He doesn't claim to be God.
We are all a piece of God. I think Jesus' second coming was when He rose from the dead after the cross.
If He comes again, it will be unnoticed by most. But like I said, I think God is living already as all 6 billion of us, and our spirit will continue on to the next dimension when we die.

Read Revelation in the Bible. People will not be following the Messiah. They will be following the antichrist.
I believe I won't be here when all of this happens.

First there will be something called the rapture. A whole bunch of people (born again christians) around the whole world will disappear. (BE raptured) 7 years after that Christ will come back on this earth to distroy the anti christ.
