Is it proper for a girl to wear shorts?
As most of you know I live in the South and my fiance's father recently told him that it aggrivated him that I wore shorts all the time. (Not to mention it's around 96 degrees). They own their own business and I'm up there a moderate amount of time, not all the time and not few and far between, but I've been around for 7 Years, it isn't new for me to wear shorts.
What do you think? Is he crazy or am I doing a no no?

How short are they? If he can see your butt cheeks, then it's inappropriate. If they are a decent length, then your fiance's father is an idiot.

Shorts are perfectly acceptable, provided they aren't "Daisy Dukes" (cheek baring, super short shorts, which are completely inappropriate in any setting except a strip club). However, some older folks have a different interpretation of acceptable. If you know ahead of time that you are going to their place of business, the appropriate thing to do is dress according to the ettiquette of the location (ie: wear pants or a skirt, if a skirt is acceptable). Wearing a skirt should be fine with your FIL, as that is "ladylike" and just as cool as shorts. The most important thing here is that you need to respect your FIL and his business/livelihood.

Generally speaking, I don't wear shorts. I think they're for kids, so that will probably color what I'm about to say:

Depends on the shorts and where you wear them to. Capris are almost always appropriate, while short shorts should only really be worn around the house. Also, shorts tend to be very casual in general, so maybe you're dressing too sloppy for visiting with the in-laws.

Now, if you're hanging out at their place of business dressed all sloppy, then, yeah, they have every right to be annoyed with you. I would be, too!

If you are in the place of business you may need to rethink the shorts. but any other time I see know problem. It could be that his father would rather you not wear the shorts at the place of business. If you are really worried ask your future father in law what it is he prefers for you to wear when you come to the store or office.

a little of both. shorts should be clean and not too short. this all depends on the work environment. is it an office, or a feed store?
I wear shorts to work, but I don't see the public, and my coworkers that do must wear long pants.
Shorts are a bit more acceptable for the ladies,

As always it depends.

If you are dropping by the house for a visit, shorts should be fine. Too bad if doesn't like it.

If you are hanging around their business office, short-shorts and tube top are probably not a good choice.

You already know the answer to this one. And Youu are just looking for some support. Have your fiance tell his father to mind his own business. Or find you another fiance :D

What is this, the 1930's? Of course it's ok to wear shorts, as long as they're not Daisy Duke style when not appropriate.

I wouldn't call the father an idiot (having some respect), but otherwise, I agree with Hot Pants as well!

If you are at the place of business and the shorts are "short" then they are probably inappropriate. Otherwise, wear them!
