I love my parents dearly, and what I'm going to say seems like a minor thing compared to the other comments on here, but here it is.

My parents, especially my dad, even though he doesn't do it on purpose (I don't think), has always managed to make me feel ugly, so now I'm super self-conscious about how I look when I'm around them. I remember once when I had just dyed my hair to a different color (and I liked it!), I hadn't seen my parents for a couple of months, the first comment out of my father's mouth wasn't hello, how are you, good to see you, it was: "You look terrible". That was 4 years ago. I'm almost 40 years old, you'd think by now that this wouldn't be an issue, that I wouldn't care what they think about how I look, but I do. Tearing down a child's self-esteem has got to be the worst thing any parent can do to a child.

actually, I must have lived a pretty charmed life, I can't ever recall being mistreated. I read some of these answers and think how can some people be so cruel. I feel for ya folks. oh I did get a whipping one time when I had done nothing wrong, none of us would admit to it so we all got whippings.

My ex step dad was a alcoholic so he whipped me everyday with a leather belt, (left spider webs on my legs and arms 4 inches wide) forgot to pick me up from school all the time sexually molested me sent me to my room without food all the time told me he was going to kill my mom If she ever found out and that he was going to kill my family and make me watch if I told them.. so now anybody that is ready this and has every said there life was horrible because their parents won't let them go out or whatever slap yourselves because you are lucky that that is all you have to worry about.

WOW....I never told anyone this but my best friend BUT......... about 4 years ago my mother left my father and I told her she could stay with me until she got an apartment. Well, daddy would come and visit her at my house quite often to try and convince her to come home so it wasn't weird that he was at my house with her and one of her female friends hanging out at 2 am when I had gotten in. I guess they thought I was sleeping but I watching a movie with my best friend and when I had gotten up to get a drink of water I heard this weird noise coming from the living room area. I couldn't believe my eye's. They all are so nasty......YUCK... They were having a threesome on MY rug, in MY living room and still to this day don't know that I saw them. They only get hugs from me now.....LMAO..........not even a kiss on the cheek. I think I need a therapist......or maybe they do.....HILARIOUS

The worst thing would have to be that they lied to me about who my real parents are and they said I was trash and that was why I was put up for adoption.

Any kind of physical or verbal abuse wasn't nearly as bad as them letting me know that I was pretty & should be able to get a " good catch ". No talk of a good job, college.......just that I should look for a great guy to take care of me. They may have meant well, but it hurt my self esteem. They didn't think I was capable of doing anything with my life & had very few expectations of me. No hope of anything great coming from me..........

Once my mother left me at the funeral home when my grandfather died. She was so distraught that she completely forgot about me and left me there all day. When someone found me I was sitting under a chair. I was only 3 years old.

Not going to my college graduation out of laziness. If you have a child that's graduating from high school or college, you're supposed to do everything you can to get there.
