It's gross

It's not gross - it's necessary for people that can't get out of bed. The other option is adult diapers which ARE gross - especially if the person has to lie around in them for a while. I worked in health care for people who were quadrapalegics, too elderly to use the toilet, suffering spinal cord injuries... Defecating is just another bodily function that these people have lost control of. What would you suggest as an alternative? I'm honestly curious.

BTW, be aware that at some point in your life you may be using the bedpan... and I hope whoever has to empty it for you doesn't tell you it's gross. Believe me, people who have to use bedpans don't like it anymore than the people who have to clean them.

I may be out of the loop here, but isn't a bed pan supposed to be used as a toilet?

i hope these people aren't perfectly healthy and not sick. If you are sick and you can't make it to the toilet....a bed pan in the way to go...but if you are just doing it because you have some weird obsession or a fear of toilets...then you need to see a shrink

some medical necessities are essential.. even if they are gross.. How would you like it to have 2 amputated legs and be stuck in bed with no other option than to just let it fly? I know I would think twice before visiting.
But if you don't need them they make a decent swimming pool for domestic mice.. or banana split bowls if you were in a pinch :)
Now THAT is nasty.. want some dessert?

It's better than what one of my clients did. Usually she used a commode but because she is an alcoholic and lazy, one evening she said she needed to pee but had no desire to get up from the couch. I had to get her a big towel and put under her, pull down her underwear and let her go.....I was totally disgusted but didn't let on. She soon went into the hospital and I never saw her again. I don't miss her.

Well that's what bedpans are for. So that people who are unable to leave their bed to get to the bathroom can go. What do you expect them to do, just urinate and crap all over themselves?

I think it is sad. My grandfather had to use a bedpan before he died because he could no longer get around.

If the person can't get up to use the toilet what else can they do?

People who use bedpans are usually sick and bed ridden.

I'd say they're old and can't help it, we may all be there one day so I wouldn't say it's gross, just apart of growing old.
