A little jealousy can be a positive thing when it is caused by a lack adaisical treatment of a spouse or child. It can make a person wake up and say hey not with my loved one you aren't.
but most of the time it is an emotion than brings about a violent reaction in people for no good reason. It is an irrational kind of emotion that is present in all people ,but more so with those who have a self-esteem problem and are highly competitive. It can make a persons spouse totally miserable in trying to not make their spouse jealous because they are suspicious and over bearing about it.

Jealousy is destructive. How can an emotion that require's so much of a person's time and mental capacity be productive?
It also has nothing to do with one's up bringing.I think that it's a society defict. For we do live in a throw away society.

It reflects on how we perceive ourselves to be, good enough or not good enough according to the current standards that society places on us. For example, right now it's all the rage to be tall, thin, and wear those jeans that are below the belly button. Well, if more people liked that than don't, then that becomes a society standard of beauty. It's all about influence of the masses. So if you think back about your original question, should we be jealous of other people, places, situations or things? Well no, because it's a force outside of ourselves, therefore uncontrollable, therefore not connected to our self worth.

Both, thats the reason why the world revolves. Jealousy helps individuals thrive for success especially when they see their rivals getting ahead of the game. But it can be destructive in the sense that the individual concentrates on only one thing and ignores the things around them which can have a negative impact on their lives.

Jealousy is useful if the two exercising it are utilizing it in a playful and responsible way. Neither is going to far and both are secure in their position with the other. No insecurity is the key.
Jealousy is destructive other wise.
One of the 7 deadly sins...
Be Careful.

I have never thought of it as useful. I see it as a very destructive behavior. I can only relate to myself but it definitely wasn't my upbringing. Logic of genes.... maybe? Society does play a big part in it for me.

i think jealousy is a lack of ones self confidence/esteem.I was the KING of jealousy up til about 3 years ago,i was so bad that if any guy would even as much as say hi to my wife i was tearing that poor soul apart, then out of nowhere we talked about having an open/swinger lifestyle,no lies,no jealousy,it has been the BEST 3 years of my life,to see my wife with another man/woman,is the ultimate rush for me,its not about who's she's with, the big picture is the pleasure and experience she and i just had.so bottom line is life is too short to be jealous of the one/s you care about.

If you're the jealous one, it can be very destructive...you will constantly try to compare yourself to others wishing you had what they have. This can build up a lot of self hate, definitely not healthy. If there is someone jealous of you, it can be useful because it can make you realize that you have something that someone else wants, boosting your confidence and love for yourself. We don't always realize our strengths until someone else points them out.

Jealousy comes from two things.
Not trusting your mate to make the right decision or your own fears of inadequacy.
I think is it very immature. I love my husband and trust him. I'm comfortable with myself so I don't feel threatened by other women. I'm not perfect, far from it. But I have alot to offer my husband and I know without a doubt, I'm a great wife.
