Is this practical? Would their toenails get tied up in the mesh? I want them to have stuff to climb on like they had at the pet store and space to fly around :-)

budgie is short for budgerigar which is a small Australian parrot. They look similar to canaries. (BIRDS)

I don't have any other pets so there is no risk of a cat getting in :-)

Mesh is not a good idea!!!! They can very easily get caught up in it. When we bred cockatiels we made a flight room for them using metal window screening. You can also get a product similar to chicken-wire but it has smaller holes it is called " Hardware Cloth" you get it at home depot or any other building supply store.
The screening was cheaper in the beginning but it doesn't last as long.

I hope this helps

Mesh is a pretty decent idea. It's safe because mostly every cage is partly mesh or includes it. They possibly could get tangled but they know how to get out. First of all there are two tpyes of mesh-- wired or netted. So you choose and see which one would be safer. You would always have to be with them or check on them every some minutes, that would be a little safer. They usually play around and have fun. Just look after them though.

They will not get caught on the mesh, that is what they make the large cages out of, the main problem you will have is having no control over where they mess.

Some seniors housing and assisted living facilities have pretty large enclosures for birds that the residents enjoy watching. Check them out.
You'll need access for cleaning and assorted animal husbandry stuff, but it has to deny entry to cats, nu?

No don't get mess.
I let mine fly freely, just watch and make sure windows and doors have screens.

What are "budgies"? Sorry, I could have only assumed they were a bird (category), but thanks for answering me!
