I went through dialysis about 3 years ago. I had it for 5 months----5 long months. BUt I am lucky to have a transplant now. My experience? I found out that my kidneys failed in early 2002. My options were dialysis and/or transplant. I showed all of the classic symptoms---itching, fatigue, loss of weight, etc. My creatnin over the next few months gradually shot up. I refused to get dialysis. I DID NOT want a shunt on my arm, much less any part of my body. But my creatnine began to shoot up so rapidly that I could barely walk. So, I agreed to dialysis. I asked my doctors for options---I got a hunt on the side of my nieck/side of my chest area. It is less obtrusive their then your arm (greatest dialysis choice of my life). I woke up @ 5A MWF to get my treatment. AND I FELT GREAT after the treatments. Despite the shi%%y diet and the sh%%ty tube, I felt great physically. It was tough, but I thank my sister everyday for the gift of life. I will tell you that many people that I have met were miserable on dialysis. I guess it was a state of mind. I'll always pray for your bro. and others who are going through the diesease. I know that he will pull through. If you have any other ???'s, e-mail me. BTW, how old is he? I was young when I went through it. I turned 30 when I went through it.

I have been on Dialysis several times. I was born with a kidney disease called Focalglomnephritis and I have had three kidney transplants and am waiting for my fourth one. When I was on Dialysis it was hard to do normal things. I was on peritoneal Dialysis with the one in the stomach and I had to have it with me ever where I go. I could not go swimming very often and got infected. It was not that bad thought because I was able to do the dialysis at home. Sometime you can loose energy, but they can give you a medication that can help. You do get water retention and can look bloated. It does help you while you are waiting for your transplant and it is the way to go. I know many people who have been on dialysis and most of them live normal lives.

my recently passed away from her battle with diabetes. Before giving her my kidney, she was on dialysis for several years. She used 2 types of dialysis- he mo and peritoneal. You should see your doctor on what type will do yo best.
While on dialysis,my wife lead an almost balance life, but had to watch everything see drank.Too much fluid build up can be bad for your illness.
