What happens when humans consume too much salt? I love eating sunflower seeds (in the shell); I quit smoking back a few months ago and this helps keep my mouth busy... but I worry that I am getting too much salt. What will happen to my body and what are some alternatives you can think of to chewing sunflower seeds? I don't much like sweets/sugary candy.

Too much salt leads to fluid retention and eventually hypertension, which can cause strokes, heart disease and organ failure. It's serious stuff.

Alternatives: Ice cubes, but crunching them is not good for your teeth. Unsalted air popped popcorn. Raw, unsalted nuts like almonds, but in moderation. Crunchy vegetables like celery, radishes, carrots or jicama (yummy!).

Can you get unsalted sunflower seeds? Too much salt will cause you to retain fluids....which will make you swell up...and may cause hypertension.
