Do odd jobs around the neighborhood, do chores around the house.

Without a camera, it's kinda hard. Until then, do a lot of reading and studying of other people's work. Just because you don't have a camera doesn't mean you can't start training your eye. A lot of local libraries have books on photography, so check that out. (of course, be sure to get a book on the type of photography you want to do).

If it's price that's keeping your dad from buying, mention the fact you can get used cameras for a very good price now days. I have one or two that I'd be willing to part with for a very low price.

Another thing that may be deterring your dad is he doesn't know what kind of commitment you'll put into it. Be sure to let him know that the investment won't be a waste of money.

try a local photo co-op. if that's not an option check your local papers for estate sales. Then, there's always Ebay, if you have an account. Don't buy any camera unless the seller will give you a 7-10 day trial period to check it out. If they say NO, then move on to the next auction. IF you want 35mm stick with Canon, Nikon or Pentax. Minoltas have a very high/repair return rate. If you want a larger format, I recommend the Mamiya twin lens cameras as a good, inexpensive choice. Try to get the black lenses. The old chrome ones were typically more inferior. Good Luck!

Get busy and earn the money for your first camera. If you have such an interest in photography, you don't need an expensive camera. Watch the classified for a used one, buy an inexpensive one at the drug stores, even use the disposable cameras, which take fairly good pictures and are cheap. If you want it enough you can find a way for it.

Ashley, You've picked two great disciplines to study together. There are so many possibilities because of the incredible amount of choices available to you. I attended a photography school and the school provided a huge assortment of cameras that were available to students to check out of the photography"cage" If you know where you will be studying, I'd contact the school or professors of the classes you will be taking first. There is definitely no need to invest your education dollars in the latest and greatest model of camera. Most of the historically legendary photographers did not have sophisticated equipment. They became masters by studying light, composition, and the art and photographs of other photographers. It's not the size and the complexity of the magic wand, It's the skill of the magician. Best wishes for a great education! Bruce

Find ways to find money. Sell some of your items on ebay that you think you can part with. baby sit.. odd jobs of the such.

it might take a month or so but camera's arn't expensive either and you don't need the top of the line one when just starting out.
