Honestly its his job and civil duty, and you obviously don't feel that great about it if you don't like him doing his job. Firemen have scheduled hours and shifts as well as emergencies, like cops or truckers and that is how it'll be. Some jobs will last longer than others, other times he might be home early. Talk to him, just in case, what his work schedule is like and ask him to explain to you why he is there so often. You probably just do not understand the demand and workload there is on a fireman's shoulders, and it is just selfish then. Unless he quits his job he probably can't just slack on it, he's there to protect the people. My father in law was a firefighter and he was away a lot and there were times where he was home early and times where a fire had him away all night. He'd get calls in the middle of the night to report for an emergency shift and all sorts of things. Its time to be understanding or let him go, or see if there is any options otherwise.

Ask him to take reduced hours or change his shift. In CA, I know firefighters can work 2 consecutive days and get 3 or 4 off in a row.

That's one of the better perks of being a firefighter, you can schedule almost any shift as long as you have seniority.
