i would estimate that your brakes are at least 50% worn & i recommend that you replace your brake pads before they are 75% worn--if you do this you will probably never have to replace your calipers & rotors--if you feel a pulsation in your brake pedal you will need to replace the rotors-signs to replace your calipers are uneven braking, loss of brake fluid or brakes hanging up but a visual inspection is needed before a full diagnosis is given--as for cost i recommend replacing your nissan factory brake pads with Wagner Thermal Guard- they retail for aprox $75for fronts & $65 for rears--installation is 1 hr labor per set which can range from $40-100p/hr depending on the shop--i have used these brake pads for 2 years installed them in probably 100 2000-2004 nissans & have had virtually 0 complaints about squeaking brakes

First off, NEVER go to Midas or Car-X or any of the nationwide rip off brake chains. You can't ever leave there with out needing new brake pads, rotors & calipers. We call it CPR in this business, Midas always says you need calipers pads & rotors. There is some good advise here, take it to another Nissan dealer and get their opinion, Perhaps the tech looking at your car was a little over zealous and decided you should get new brakes when you have 30% remaining (which is when they are recommended) but you can run them easily down to 10% left with no problems.
Front & rear brakes wear at the same rate as long as they are four wheel discs. The weight of the engine has no bearing on front brakes wearing out faster. On vehicles with a disc brake on front and drum on rear the front wears faster because the disc brakes do 75% of the stopping.... Take it somewhere and have a second opinion... ask to see the brakes and get an explination on how much further you can SAFELY go. A reputible dealer is your best bet.
I have worked at both dealer & aftermarket stores... The dealer is the only place I recommend anyone to go for ANYTHING

RE:
Do I really need new brakes or was dealer just saying it to get more money?
I took my car in for an oil change & tire rotation & to look at squeeky brakes on my 04 NIssan Altima. Dealer said I need new brakes. Front & Back...runs about $480. I told them no to that. I took the car home & as I'm driving I notice the squeeking is gone. Do you think new brakes are...

You could very well need new brakes, I have a nissan and everything on it sucks. Except the engine. Ill pass on advice from my dad, And I hope it helps: If you think there's something wrong with your car, take it to a gas station mechanic. Ask him to look at it and write down what you need (dont buy anything, just get a list of whats wrong, what you need, and what it will cost). Then go to another one and do the same thing. Go home, look at the lists. If the thing you were worried about is on both of them, see which place was the cheapest and get it fixed ASAP. If it was on one or neither, dont worry about it for right now.

Don't ignore the problem. Brakes that are bad can get worst and cost more. Try to get a second opinion from a business that gives free brake checks. Most shops can change/repair brakes.

You shuoldn't cahnge the brakes...But if you decide to do so, since your car is a 2004 car there must be some coverage from Nissan that will pay for the brake change.

Why don't you run it over to Midas or some respected brake shop and get a second opinion?
I wouldn't trust my vehicle safety to the opinion of the helpful people here on Yahoo Answers.

Sometimes dirt gets trap in the brake mechanism and makes it squeak.Miles do not matter its how you drive determines how fast the brakes wear out. $480 dollars is high for a brake change. the front wears out faster then the back because of engine weight.

If you were not given the paperwork for the 3 month warranty - then you have no warranty. Get the brakes sorted asap. The brake master cylinder is leaking and will need to be replaced - potentially the servo as well.

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR BREAKS...they should last you at least another 20-25,000 miles, depends on how often you mistreat them. And do not ever go to a dealer to get car advice.
