What Did Darwin mean Am Agnostic? was he referring a bout Creation or Evolution?

Actually Darwin never coined the Phrase?Evolution.
He did know about birds and their habits. So why are they calling his studies as studies in evolution? The Phrase evolution represents a very general word does it not?
