We are having problems with our local water being contaminated. So I bought bottled water for time being, and this is when I noticed it had an expiration date on it!

Water which is not flowing can go stagnant. Bacteria and even small worms can appear.
Also when kept in a plastic bottle, chemicals from the bottle get into the water. The longer it stays more chemicals will be absorbed into water. Its also a guideline for water freshness.

Bottled water from a spring or tap isn't necessarily sterile. There could be a tiny amount of mold spores or bacteria. If you want water that is as close to sterile as possible, buy distilled water.
Even then, during the bottling process, a small amount of germs can be introduced.
If you are stuck using bottled water after the expiration date, boil it for 5 minutes. If it tastes "flat", aerate it by pouring it back and forth between two glasses. It will taste better.

The food aand drug admin. requires a experation date for everything. There are meds that don't go bad but they still have and experation date. How about your canned goods they have one too. If you can consume it it has to expire according to the FDA.

Better question, why bother paying for water when in fact you can get it for free? Honestly it is a basic human right to have water as it is a necessity. Why pay for a necessity when you already pay to have that necessity brought into your home?

pure water does not exist, except in the industrial environment (distilled water, I think); the bottled drinking water contain microorganism and minerals, that will change the quality and properties of water, in time, especially under sun exposure. christian orthodox church discovered a method of keeping water fresh forever, is a "baptised" water, but the method is one of the biggest secrets of the church.
