Definition: Pityriasis rosea is a skin disorder with a characteristic rash.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

This disorder is a common skin rash of young people, especially young adults. It occurs most commonly in the fall and spring, and a virus is suspected as the cause. Although pityriasis rosea may occur in more than one person in a household at a time, it is not thought to be highly contagious.

Attacks generally last 4 - 8 weeks. Symptoms may disappear by 3 weeks or last as long as 12 weeks. There is generally a single larger patch called a herald patch followed several days later by more a rash. Although the disorder usually resolves in time, a health care provider should be consulted to rule out other disorders including syphilis.

It is probably a virus infection, although the virus has not been identified. On the other hand, the patient shows no general symptoms except in the severest cases when there may be slight pyrexia, sore throat, and adenitis. It is unusual to find any evidence of case to case transmission, but when these do occur it is seen that the incubation period is between two to three weeks. Most of the patients are young (6 to 30 years), the sexes are equally affected, and the maximum incidence is in the first three months of the year. Second attacks of Pityriasis rosea are very rare. Pityriasis rosea is a skin disease marked by patches of pink, oval rash. Although its exact cause is unknown and its onset is not linked to food, medicines or stress, it is thought that this non-infectious condition is set off by a virus. Pityriasis rosea can occur at any age, however, it occurs most often in teenagers and young adults. Symptoms only recur in 3% of the affected.

It may itch. My experience was putting on moisturizers, which I thought would be helpful, made it itch badly. So I stopped putting anything on it and the itching stopped.
