Study finds circumcision may protect men from HIV

Circumcision may somehow protect men from sexual transmission of the AIDS virus, researchers said on Sunday, but they admitted they do not have a clue why.
A study in Uganda aimed at examining how couples infect one another found two things seemed to protect people - being older and being circumcised.
"Acquisition of HIV did not occur in any of the circumcised men," Dr. Thomas Quinn of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who led the study, told the 7th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, a meeting of AIDS researchers.
"Age, independent of viral load, appeared to have a protective effect," Quinn added. The highest transmission rate was in people 15 to 29 years old.
Quinn's team, working with 15,000 people in the Rakai district of Uganda, also found that people did not pass on the virus to their partners if they had a naturally low level of HIV in the blood - in this case, 1,500 copies according to standard measures.
He found that the more virus people had in their blood, the more likely they were to pass it on. There were no differences in women infecting men or men infecting women.
Quinn said his team was one of the first to actually go out and test the idea where HIV is raging the worst. More than 23 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV.
The findings might suggest ways of stemming the epidemic.
Telling people to abstain from sex or use condoms has not worked, and the drugs that keep the virus at bay in some patients in rich countries are not available in the poor countries hardest hit by the epidemic.
But the study suggests that using drugs to keep the virus at lower levels, or a vaccine that might do the same without quite curing a patient, might help.
Quinn said he was at a loss to explain why circumcision might affect a man's risk of being infected by a woman.

Seeing that the USA has a higher rate of STD's and HIV than the countries in Europe, South America, Scandinavia and most of Asia, it would appear that circumcision actually increases both HIV and STD's. Circumcision doesn't prevent any diseases or infections, the only things that circumcision prevents are complete, normal and natural sexual function and feeling. The people in the above-mentioned areas where males are rarely circumcised are not dropping dead from the diseases supposedly "prevented" by circumcision. Promoting circumcision was done by individuals in the medical profession who were biased by their religions, and who make money from mutilating infants' genitals. Circumcision is a fraud and a hoax. A foreskin is not a birth defect; it is a birthright. ERIC

Muslims do not perform circumcision because it prevents aids, but they do because they've been instructed to do so by prophet Mohammad. but apparently, 100's of yrs after Mohammad's instruction, it became evident to modern western medicine that circumcision is a beneficial procedure, for example cervical cancer is one of the most imp cancers in western females, while it's incidence among Jews and Muslims, who are known to perform circumcision, is trivial.
so it really makes me wonder, r u that stupid to call Muslims foolish for doing sth that's protecting them against disease, esp cancer! what next, labeling smokers smart?

first of all, u have no right to call any belief foolish. muslims are not foolish. every religion has their own belief. and u never know, it may prevent aids. ive never heard of a muslim transferring aids... and secondly, u shud do ur research on a site that is more religiously authentic. yahoo answers is great! but not for finding the truth in religion!!!

it's lack of literacy with in the community. the literate muslim does not think like that. how ever they pertain to do that since their religion allow them to marry with many women. Infact they use religion to favor their personal interest and victimize the women. In our country slowly women are being empowered. Soon muslim women will do so. All religion are great if you don't be biased.
Muslim will learn these once literacy level goes up The other community of the world need to support them.

Muslim's believe in the commandment from God to Abraham to circumcise their children on the eighth day.
Even Jesus kept this commandment. However Gentiles are not commanded to keep this commandment. Christians circumcision is of the heart. Believing that God sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins and to be risen to glory.
