EBONEY O, Mites are like fleas on birds they bite and suck blood until the birds pick themselves open with open wounds and sometimes die from them.

To get rid of mites you have to go to the pet store like pets mart or pet co and buy 4 or 5 of those large cans of mite killer. Now I dont know the name of them, but those you hang on the bird cage, cover the bird cage with the birds inside for 24 hours then remove the cover. You can also fight them by placing moth balls in the corners of the room but do not use moth balls if you allow your birds to roam lose in the room or house. If you have a problem finding the item ask the clerk to show you the cans of mites disinfectant in the pet store. I have 2 of those in 20 yrs and have never had a problem with mites. Always keep your new birds away from from your other birds and always treat all new birds coming with the mite cans. You can find them nearly anywhere if you know what to look for. They come in a box and you take them out of the box, take the cover tape off of the holes of the can and hang the can on the cage your birds are in for good. GOOD LUCK!

Certain types of mites live in wood, and come out only at night. They crawl up onto the bird's legs, and even go into the feather shafts. Here's a couple excerpts from old articles I found:

American Cage Bird Magazine, January 1991, page 21, by David Alderton "Red mite is probably the most widespread parasite in birdkeeping circles. This is because it can attack a wide variety of birds, and is not confined to a particular group. Once red mites have gained access to an aviary or birdroom, they may escape detection at first, but grow rapidly in numbers. It is possible to see them with the naked eye, but more convincing signs will be telltale tiny dark spots, around joints in a breeding cage for example. Covering the cage at night with a white cloth may reveal the mites on the following morning as tiny red spots. Use a magnifying glass if you are in doubt. It is almost certain that these mites can be spread from aviary to aviary by birds themselves. You can eliminate this risk by treating all new acquisitions and possibly birds returning from shows as well, with a suitable, safe aerosol spray.

Special pyrethum-based powders are also available for dusting nestbboxes or cages, as well as birds. Longer term treatments, which can be either brushed or sprayed within the bird room to banish mites for a full breeding season, are especially useful."

Babe, you are obviously just turning him on even more by making him feel needed. He's also probably riddled with guilt at the idea of leaving you when you're in such bad shape. Clean the house, get a makeover, and introduce him to the biggest loser you can find. You'll all be happier!

call an avian (a bird vet, i think i spelled wrong) they should be able to tell you, maybe even the humane society. im sure they have to fumigate once in a while. even your vet should know. how many birds are you talking about? you have to have their cages and their room completely clear of the little buggers before you can bring them back in. first, treat them, clean and sterilize their cages before you put them back in there. make sure you use bleach on their cages, toys, food cups, perches, etc. fumigate the room!! please call your vet for more info. those little buggers can kill your birds
