Yes 1st before you start your PC INSERT YOUR XP DISK IN DRIVE. If your PC start from CD then you be fine just follow the INSTRUCTION but if your PC do not start from CD then you have to tell your BIOS 1st BOOT Device is CDROM.
To do this start your PC and start pressing the DEL key on your Keyboard. This will help you to ENTER BIOS SETTINGS. Look for 1st BOOT DEVICE it could be FLOPPY OR HDD AND LAST WILL BE CDROM.
Now here if you have FLOPPY CHANGE THAT TO CDROM AND SAVE AND EXIT BIOS.
IF YOU HAVE HDD THEN CHANGE THAT TO CDROM AND SAVE AND EXIT
THIS SHOULD START YOUR CDROM AS 1ST BOOT DEVICE.

Good Try ! You can do it your self.
There are variours factors which is to work fast with winxp.
The Ram of the Machine should be 256 or higher ( 512 Mb recomended ).
Processor Speed at least 1.2 GHz Celeron ( PIII or is recomended )
Then Free space of HD atleast 750 GB should be there to install the WinXP.
If all the above is positive in your machine then just insert the cd go with positive results of the comments displayed by the Microsoft on the screen while installation process goes on...
If you have prior exp. in installation of S/W or games in Systems will help you.
Still if you find trouble then dont take risk and dont waste your precious time. Just call a good Hardware Engg. ( may be your friend ) ask them to install it.
You please watch the entaire secnario of installation. thus you wil learn. Just ask doubts if you have while the Engg. installs the software.
Take care,

You are flirting with software piracy. Make sure that he has a valid license for installing it on another PC (I assume he has installed it on other PCs), or that he uninstalls it from all other PCs.
First, make sure that your system has enough RAM and free memory (Windows XP takes up around 2 GB)
Then uninstall Windows 98 through the Control Panel.
Then turn off your PC, put in the disk and restart the PC.
Follow the instructions that appear onscreen. They will guide through installation.

XP install (retail) comes in two options - 1. Install Fresh/Upgrade. 2 Install Fresh only.
If u get the upgrade option, u'll be able to install XP over ur copy of 98 only.. and to a lot of extent, ur programs and everything will remain. If u choose to install new.. do it over another partition. or format ur drive which currently has 98 installed. and then fresh-install XP.

Go to Komando.com...follow the prompts.
If you don't register the XP program with microsoft, it will only run 30 days and won't have any technical support or updates.
