If an 18 year old kid from anywhere else in the world can join the military, go through boot camp, go to fight in a war and is normally out of the service and home in 4 years, why is it that the coalition is still fighting in Iraq and the Iraqi's aren't even close to being ready to "step up?"

It"s called RAMPING UP,getting enough people, equipment, logistics to do the job.
You can train a basic rifleman in 6 mos. after boot camp, then you need as many as 10 people in supply, admin, medical, ect just to support him in the fight.
To get that rifleman up to full proficiency takes about 2.5 years, then you have someone who has a good chance to survive and train others

We could take Iraqi Recruits (assuming they speak English) put them in our Army Train them and put them in our Units and that would work fine. It is not the individuals training that takes so long it is the training of the leaders and the systems involved in running units and fighting wars that we are building.

It takes the US Army 20 years to make a Battalion Commander, 5-10 years to make a Company Commander, etc....

You can train someone to work at a company in a few weeks so why does it take so long to start up a new company from scratch?

The Iraqi Army is constantly being sabotaged. New recruits receive death threats against themselves and their families. There are bombings at recruiting stations. Sometimes Insurgents get recruited and gain info that they pass off to their insurgent colleagues, etc....

I think I can shed a little light...

Being a veteran, I can tell you that in order to have a unit fit for duty, your soldiers have to be trained, disciplined, be willing to work as a cohesive team, and be able to think under pressure.

Look at the Iraqis. They're so brain-washed by Saddam Houssein that they cannot think for themselves, and are, therefore, unable to be trained.

As long as they are fanatical about a religion that encourages its follower to kill non-believers, they cannot be disciplined.

Their culture has imbedded in them the idea that they are single entities, working their Jihads for Allah on their own. You never see a team of car bombers, right? Therefore, they cannot work as a cohisive team.

For the same reason they cannot be trained, they cannot think for themselves. If they canno think for themselves in peacetime, they certainly cannot think under pressure.

We had to start some scratch and create a new Army, not simply add new recruits to an already established army.
