His anal glands are full. You need to take him to the vet to have him clear them or teach you how to do it. My lab used to do this and that is what I had to do. When the dog is dragging his butt like that, he is trying to release the fluid himself. You might want to have the vet do it because the fluid is pretty foul smelling.

Huggybear has the answer. His anal glands are full. Most dogs take care of it themselves by dragging their but on the ground others have trouble. You can wait a day or so it see if he stops or take him to the vet and learn how to do it for your dog. If you wait too long it gets really uncomfortable for the dog and really smelly too. I have two dogs. One takes care it herself the other I have to squeeze the glands for her.

He may need his anal glands expressed. The vet can do this quite easily. (Actually, you could probably do it yourself, if you have a cooperative dog, know what you are doing, have some rubber gloves, and have absolutely NO gag reflex. I have worked for a vet for several years, and that is on the top 5 of vile smells.)

All dogs have glands around their but hole. And somtimes they get itchy and that is the way they scratch their butts.

Has your dog been wormed? It's usually a good indicator that he needs to go on worming tablets

My cocker spaniel does this alot. It's not his glands and his butt has always been clean and he doesn't have worms.. I think he's scratching it.

Either his anal glands are full or he has worms. The vet can help with both!

It is one of two things.....anal glands are full or he has tapeworms (not harmful to him just cause itchy butt). He gets tapeworms from fleas.
