they know more than you think.. you'll learn how to speak to them, using very general words and gestures
you will also benefit from learning to basic words like restroom, taxi, payphone, etc
but its very americanized in those countries, especially in the more urban areas. When you get off into rural, secluded areas you will have more problems, but most of them will know what you want just buy your gestures and such.

When I vistited China a year ago I had already had two years of Mandarin instruction. I went to four cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao and Hangzhou and found in all four that it was to a person's benefit to be familiar with Chinese. I found that the average person I encountered in daily life could only speak about ten odd phrases that were useful to them. Most of them were not comfortable even attempting English. But, the people in the tourist industry, such as guides, "Western" restauranteurs and hotel personnel usually spoke English fairly well. It is to your advantage to make an effort in their language though... they were very appreciative when we did our best to speak Mandarin to them.

As I understand it, the education systems today have a mandatory class for learning the English language in many country's. According to those I've spoke with, English is the only mandatory language. I did meet one fellow not to long ago who was in his 50's that spoke broken English. He said that he learned from friends, TV and reading. He understood better than spoke.
