Get a new vet. I work at a cat shelter with a low cost spay/neuter clinic and we spay pregnant and in heat cats ALL the time. We see about 60 cats each week and at least half are in heat or pregnant. So you can spay a cat in heat. Your vet is either a total idiot, or never told you that.
It is true for dogs...the uterus is bigger than it is in cats.
Get a new vet and get the cat spayed!!!!!!! There are too many unwanted cats in the world that are euthanized each day.

Umm... I have never heard of a vet not spaying a cat because she is in heat. I would go to another vet and get a second opinion if I were you.

Keep her inside! She's going to keep cycling anyways during the summer so she will just need to be fixed. Cat spays are pretty easy these days, she will be ok. At a shelter they sometimes cost 25 dollars more to get it done suring a heat cycle. You might try going to a shelter for a second opinion since it won't cost money to ask them.

You can get her spayed while she's in heat. There is a slightly higher risk, and it will cost you more.
If you don't want to do that, keep her away from all male cats, wait until she's not in heat, and then get her spayed. Heck, go ahead and make the appointment now. It's the responsible thing to do.

After two nights of no sleep (because my cat was calling all the males in the neighborhood from our window), I called the vet. They took her the same day, and it didn't cost me more than the normal cost for spaying. She's now 16 years old and hasn't had any bad effects.

You can bathe her. or spray water on her : ( it's pretty sad. Bathe her when it's warm outside. My cat was in heat.. it was the worst thing ever. Please get her spayed. GO to your nearest animal shelter. They can give you a voucher for low income families. :| Poor kitty.
