Some healthy friends of mine told me how to lightly coat a huge portabella mushroom head in olive oil and cook it on a grill with Mrs. Dash. I put it on my own whole wheat bread with just a dab of steak sauce. IT WAS MARVELOUS!!! How do I compare these nutritionally. Is mushroom a vegetable, no fat, what? I'm thinking it's got to be lower cal than beef too???

Yes, it is lower calorie than beef, but less protein. Your whole wheat bread should have a few grams of protein and iron though( if it is truly a whole grain, whole wheat flour should be in the 1st three ingredients). It does sounds very tasty. I would probably add a low fat cheese and grilled onions next time, ooooohhh wee.

Mushrooms are an "above ground fruiting fungus" and do have some protein, fiber, B vitamins, and are a source of iron, selenium, potassium, and phosphorus. And yes, they are fat free, that is why I am all for adding some strong tasting cheese, for greater satisfaction. Mushrooms havelong believed to but nutrtionally worthless, but are not, GREAT CHOICE!!!

I have no clue, but I would take a portabella sandwich over a steak sandwich any day, the one at Stanfords rocks by the way.
